The Companion Animal Program (CAP) was introduced in May, 1978 to give children in the Residential Program an opportunity to interact with and care for animals as an integral component of their therapy. The children accompany and assist the Companion Animal Program Director on a daily basis, as the director teaches the children how to appropriately tend the animals. In caring for the animals the children learn to respond to and emulate positive and gentle behavior as it is modeled for them.
Over the years, the Companion Animal Program has expanded its menagerie to include goats, sheep, rabbits, hens and geese. The program is housed in a restored 18th-century barn.
